Copying files to or from home

We support using SFTP to transfer files to and from your computers at home. For Windows, we recommend winscp, for Mac OSX there is fugu, or if you are using Linux, there is gftp. (Or you can use Nautilus's "Connect to Server" feature.)

Using your sftp client on your home computer, type login.secs.oakland.edu as the host you would like to connect to, choose SFTP (port 22) as your protocol, and choose your SECS username and password as your login credentials.

Different clients do it differently, but they are all very straightforward. You can use drag and drop to copy things into your SECS storage. This is what it looks like in Winscp:

Now, when you are in school on one of the lab machines, just browse to your H: drive and there will be everything you copied via SFTP. Also, anything you put in your H: drive will show up in SFTP so you can get it from home as well. If you use any of the SECS UNIX machines, your home directory is the same as the directory that shows up in SFTP. So it works the same as in windows, but just browse to your home directory instead of H: (And as a side note, your UNIX home directory and windows H: drive are the same thing.)

DO NOT delete directories that start with periods (like .ssh), they are essential for login into Linux systems. We recommend that you turn off "Show Hidden Files" in the WinSCP preferences (Or hit CTRL-ALT-H).

Check out the Personal Web Pages page for information on setting up a personal web page on the SECS servers.
