Frequently Asked Questions
My professor told me I can connect to the SECS network from home, this is more convenient for me, how do I do this?
See the documentation on using the VPN, Transferring Files, Remote Desktop, NX using screen, and using ssh. For any graphical UNIX applications, NX is definitely the way to go.
My final paper is due in an hour and the labs are packed, also all the UNIX machines are slow, why?
We have a limited amount of resources, unfortunately towards the end of the semester the amount of jobs being run on the UNIX machines is dramatically increased. You can use screen to run jobs from remote locations during offpeak periods.
I am interested in getting software that is licensed for use on my home PC, where can I find out more information?
Your professor has software request forms, which need to be filled out and signed. You can then pick up the software in DHE153. Here's a list of software we have.
My USB key doesn't work in the labs, help!
Please look at this page for instructions in how to fix your USB key.
Can you give me a code to the padlocks for the labs?
Nope, we don't handle those. Your professor will give you a code to use during one of their lectures. If you're having problems with the code, please visit Len Brown's Office in DHE145.
What are the hours I can stop by and sign out software?
Monday - Friday, 9am to 5pm. If you are attending a late class and want to turn in software, you can also return the software by sliding it underneath the door of DHE153.
I applied for an SECS account and still haven't gotten a response, help!
Please allow up to 24 hours for your account to be processed. If you are still having problems then contact us.
Can you help me with my homework?
Of course not.
