Desktop Overview
Logging In
Getting onto the SECS computers is easy. Once you have an account, sit down at a machine that is currently logged out. Move the mouse or touch a button on the keyboard to wake it up and verify that it says "Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to begin" on the screen, and that noone is logged in.
Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to get the machine to give you a login window. In this window, type your username given to you, your password, and make sure "SECS-DOMAIN" is selected on the "Log on to:" box. If you don't see that box, try clicking the "Options" button and see if it will come up.
If it does not come up, you are probably on a machine you don't have an account on. Check with a lab manager for assistance.
Once you have that set up, press OK or hit enter. The computer should log in, and you should see your desktop. Don't worry if this process takes a while, especially if it is the first time you log into the machine.
Now you will probably want to use the software available in your class. Click the "Start" button and look at the "SECS Apps" menu on the top. You'll probably find your software there. For web browsing, we recommend Firefox. It is available in the SECS Apps menu, or sometimes on the desktop itself. If you need Internet Explorer, it's in the "Programs" menu.
Saving your Files
Each student has space on our Network Attached Storage for their files. We map this as drive H: on all the lab machines. Always save your data to the H: Drive , this will ensure that it gets backed up.
If you absolutely need to save something to the local machine, we have C:\Students set up for things like that.
